Background: Cyrus Shaoul

After living in Japan during his High School years, Cyrus Shaoul attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and graduated with B.S. in Brain and Cognitive Sciences in May 1993. He then moved to back to Japan thanks to an MIT-Japan Program internship at NTT. In the Visual Media Group of the Human Interface Research Laboratories, Cyrus served as a software developer/researcher for the group, co-developing a large scale, real-time, virtual reality communications environment called Interspace.

After finishing at NTT, he founded one of the first web development companies in Japan, Eccosys Co, Ltd. (1994 - 1997). During this period, he managed over 20 projects, including: Building one of the first content sites in Japan, the Asahi Shinbun Magazine Web Site, one of the first permission marketing sites in Japan, Admall (in partnership with Hakuhodo), producing a large Internet event called the Junior Summit, sponsored by Mr. Okawa of CSK, and producing parts of the Internet Work Expo in Japan in 1996.

In a 1997 merger, Eccosys became part of Digital Garage Inc., and from that point on, Cyrus served as member of board of directors, involved in defining DG's technological direction and international business strategy. He managed many diverse projects. Some notable ones include:

  • Infoseek Japan Launch: Cyrus oversaw the localization of the search technology and the user interface design of the first robot-based search engine in Japan
  • Ultraseek Server/Inktomi Search Launch: Managed the localization of this package search engine software, and sold it to over 200 Japanese corporations.
  • Launch of Charles Schwab service in Japan: Led a team that helped Schwab on the technical and marketing aspects of their launch.
  • Building and Launch of WebNation: Led team that developed the technology for WebNation, a DG-owned consumer e-commerce platform developed in-house. Also led the development of SonicNet Japan, a music news/content site built in partnership with Sonicnet.com.
